FLOWERS & WEED
Pressed flowers, adhesive, matt varnish
[Dandelion Taraxacum officinale, Singapore daisy Spagneticola trilobata, Common Sunflower Helianthus Annuus and Rose Rosa – mixed species]
Alithea’s latest series Flowers & Weeds combines traditional and contemporary techniques of pressing and preserving flowers, to create geometric-style patterns based on colour, size and shape. Driven by the fascination of the symbolic use of flowers throughout art history; often representing beauty and decay, life and death, celebration and mourning, masculinity and femininity; Alithea plays with and contrasts these cultural associations by ensuring they will forever remain in a state between life and death through pressing and preserving. Flowers & Weeds also draws inspiration from geometry and geometric patterns found in nature such as the Fibonacci Spiral and Golden Ratio. Attracted by the link between mathematics and the natural world, Alithea uses her pressed and preserved flowers to create simple geometric patterns to highlight the subtle irregularities in the form of the flowers in contrast to the symmetry of geometric patterns produced through her work.
