CELLULAR
Digital Image
[Gerbera Gerbera and Rose Rosa – mixed species]
Continuing to work with a combination of traditional flower pressing techniques and digital processes, Alithea Josaphine explores the intricate world of organic pattern making in her series Cellular. Beginning by growing and collecting a wind range of flowering species, artificially dying some flowers for a more exuberant effect. Each petal is then picked and pressed, a process that can take weeks. Once the petals have been preserved they are scanned and digitally arranged to fit together based on their size, shape and colour much like an enormous jigsaw puzzle. Inspired by the structure of microscopic plant cells, theses intricate and organic-flowing works seem to mimic patterns within nature, resembling scales on a snake’s skin or lily pads filling the surface of a pond.
